Ectopic third molar in the mandibular condyle: A review of the literature
2012
Objectives: To evaluate the etiopathogenesis, clinical features, therapeutic options, and surgical approaches for removal of ectopic third molars in the mandibular condyle. Study design: MEDLINE search of articles published on ectopic third molars in the mandibular condyle from 1980 to 2011. 14 well-documented clinical cases from the literature were evaluated together with a new clinical case provided by the authors, representing a sample of 15 patients. Results: We found a mean age at diagnosis of 48.6 years and a higher prevalence in women. In 14 patients, associated radiolucent lesions were diagnosed on radiographic studies and confirmed histopathologically as odontogenic cysts. Clinical…
Evaluation of Kharma scale as a predictor of lower third molar extraction difficulty
2017
Background The Evaluation of the degree of lower third molar (L3M) extraction difficulty is extremely important for both clinicians and patients. This study aimed to evaluate the validity of a new index (Kharma scale) as a preoperative predictor index of the difficulty of surgical removal of impacted L3M. Material and Methods Extraction difficulty of a series of 49-impacted L3M was predicted preoperatively by Kharma scale, and postoperative difficulty was assessed with a modified Parant scale. Results The sensitivity of Kharma scale, as a predictor of difficulty, was 18.2% and the specificity was 68.4%. Likelihood ratios for the Kharma categories also indicated that the scale is of little v…
A histological evaluation of the surgical margins from human oral fibrous-epithelial lesions excised with CO2 laser, Diode laser, Er:YAG laser, Nd:YA…
2018
Background We aim to evaluate the presence of histological artefacts in the surgical margins of human oral fibro-epithelial hyperplasias excised with lasers of different wavelengths, and also electrosurgical scalpel and cold scalpel. Moreover, we aim to determine if some of these instruments could impair the normal histological diagnosis of these lesions. Material and Methods We included 130 consecutive surgical samples of 80 females and 50 males (mean age of 53.82±16.55) with a histological diagnosis of an oral benign fibrous-epithelial hyperplasias. The samples were categorized into 6 groups according to the type of instrument used: CO2 laser group, diode laser group, Er:YAG laser group, …
Clinicopathological and ultrastructural characterization of periapical actinomycosis
2019
Background The aim of the present study was to analyze the clinicopathological and the ultrastructural features of periapical actinomycosis (PA) cases. Material and Methods Data from the files of an oral pathology laboratory were retrieved and the findings of histopathological analysis were evaluated. Hematoxylin–eosin (HE), a modified Brown & Brenn, and Grocott stains as well as ultrastructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were utilized. Results Six cases were obtained, 4 females and 2 males, with a mean age of 34 year-old. Two cases were symptomatic, lower teeth and the anterior region were more commonly affected, and all…
Adaptation to life after surgical removal of the bladder—an application of graphical Markov models for analysing longitudinal data
2004
Graphical Markov models have been developed particularly for the analysis of observational data. They allow the control of various background variables when analysing theoretically relevant associations. This paper demonstrates the application and some advantages of graphical Markov models in comparison to conventional statistical analyses. The aim of the study was to identify patients at risk for developing decreased health-related quality of life (QoL) after cystectomy and to explore the influence of coping on QoL in this situation. Therefore, the method was applied to analyse the data of a prospective study, in which 81 patients with bladder cancer were interviewed pre-operatively and in…
Contralateral potentials in the suprasylvian gyrus evoked by pulvinar stimulation.
1974
AbstractIn encephale isole cats the transmission of the bioelectrical activity in the suprasylvian gyrus, evoked by contralateral pulvinar stimulation was explored. Through the excitability increase and decrease of the pulvinar (by strychnine or KCl, respectively), the surgical removal of the ipsilateral suprasylvian gyrus and the electrocoagulation of the posterior commissure it appeared that the transmission of the activity in the suprasylvian gyrus evoked by contralateral pulvinar stimulation occurs through both the callosal and the interthalamic pathway.
Foreign body granulomatous reactions to cosmetic fillers
2012
Introduction: The use of different facial cosmetic fillers has increased in recent years. The introduction of apparently inert substances in the epidermis can give rise to foreign body granulomatous reactions. Objetives: A literature review is made of the foreign body granulomatous reactions to cosmetic fillers. Material and Methods: A PubMed-Medline search was made using the following keywords: “granulomatous reactions”, “foreign body reactions”, “esthetic fillers”, “cosmetic fillers”. The search was limited to articles published in English and Spanish during the last 10 years. A total of 22 articles were reviewed. Results: A great variety of substances have been found to give rise to fore…
Laparoskopische Therapie von Leber-, Milzund Mesenterialzysten
2008
Five women and one man (average age 62.5 [20-64] years) with symptomatic intraabdominal cysts at different sites (liver: n = 3; spleen: n = 2; mesentery: n = 1) had them removed by laparoscopic surgery. Broad fenestration was performed with the hepatic and splenic cysts, while the mesenteric cyst was enucleated from the mesentery. There were no intra- or postoperative complications. Median duration of operation was 60 (45-125) min, postoperative hospital stay was 5 (3-6) days. After a median follow-up period of 8 (1-12) months a 3 cm residual cyst was found in the patient with the splenic cyst, but all patients were free of symptoms. -Laparoscopic surgery is a low-stress alternative to conv…
Regeneration of the testes in the clawed toad (Discoglossus pictus Otth.) after complete surgical removal
1967
Orofacial dermoid cysts in pediatric patients : a review of 8 cases
2010
Objective: The aim was to analyze the clinical characteristics, treatment and outcome of 8 orofacial dermoid cysts (DC) in pediatric patients. Material and Methods: A retrospective observational study was made, reviewing the medical records with clinical diagnosis of dermoid cyst between 1987 and 2006 in the Children?s Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Hospital Universitario La Fe, Valencia, Spain. The following data were collected: sex, age, location, size and duration of the lesion, treatment, length of follow-up, and recurrence. Results: Eight patients (3 girls and 5 boys) with a mean age of 2.7 years (range 0-12 years). Four DC were located in the oral area (3 sublingual and 1 lin…
